Settling of heavy pigments is always a concern in water-based coatings and inks, especially low viscosity systems like stains and slurries. Over time, water-based systems that are not sufficiently stabilized will result in visual syneresis or color float that is undesirable to consumers. IFF has introduced Lattice® NTC 90 colloidal microcrystalline cellulose powder that claimed to improve stability against settling and syneresis in water-based coatings and inks. As a cost-efficient natural product from renewable resources with zero VOC contribution, we thought we would test it in the labs to confirm the claims and generate additional data to help our customers decide if it is the right product for their system.

Lattice NTC 90 colloidal microcrystalline cellulose is a unique product and does not have direct offsets in the coatings industry. It is not used as a replacement for traditional rheology modifiers, but is used in addition to normal rheology modifiers to provide enhanced stability against settling, syneresis and color float. Lattice NTC 90 is a problem-solver that adds these benefits at low use levels and with minimal effect on viscosity and other properties. It may provide an answer when other products do not work.

Features & Benefits

  • Superior stability for syneresis and color float
  • Made from renewable resources and are zero VOC
  • Problem solver at very low use levels, <1% can be effective cost in use
  • Ease of recoat and smooth retouch for contractor paints means reduced call backs for contractors
  • Suitable for water-based systems: interior/exterior architectural coatings, paints and stains, inks, and high-solids slurries
