ASP® 170 kaolin is made using a process to create a very fine particle-size grade of aluminum silicate, featuring premium brightness. It is chemically inert and has been specially modified with dispersants for ease of dispersion.

ASP 170 is a versatile product for use in gloss and semi-gloss coatings and in a variety of ink applications. It provides a high degree of TiO2 extension and is also designed for colored pigment extension. It provides excellent optical properties in rubber and plastic compounds. The fine particle size and low residue help provide excellent dispersion and physical properties in a wide variety of polymeric systems. Its neutral pH will have minimal effect on cure rates when compounded into rubber systems.

Typical applications include solvent, water-borne gloss, and semi-gloss coatings, industrial coil and appliance coatings, solvent and water-borne inks, rubber sealants/adhesives, TPE/TPO, and BMC/SMC.

Use ASP 170 to partially replace organic pigment in your water-borne and solvent-borne ink formulations and achieve comparable ink performance & appearance, all at a lower cost.

Performance Data

The effectiveness of organic pigment extension with ASP 170 kaolin was evaluated in offset ink formulation with pigment bases of PY 174 and PR 57:1. The control formulas contained no kaolin, while the modified formulas included 4.5% ASP 170 and 2% less organic pigment. The inks reformulated with ASP 170 displayed improved ink bodies, which could be further modified with oil and resin to achieve desired flow, and also exhibited lower water pick-up and less misting compared to the control formulations. These characteristics result in better printability and overall ink transfer.
